1998 Roots in Consulting & Training Jon Miller co-founded Gemba Research, a company focusing on consulting, training and benchmarking tours to support lean transformations for clients across more than 20 countries.
2009 Formation of Gemba Academy Recognizing the need for a scalable, high-quality and cost-effective option solution for training, Gemba Research partnered with Ron Pereira and Kevin Meyer to form Gemba Academy in 2009, creating the leading online learning platform for lean, six sigma and continuous improvement.
2011 Focus on Online Learning Solutions Gemba Research combined its consulting and training business with the global operations of Kaizen Institute in 2011. Gemba Academy continued serving clients as an independent company.
2016-Today Recommitment to Supporting Clients On-Site & Online During the eight years of focusing on developing and delivering e‑learning solutions, Gemba Academy increasingly heard from customers about their need for on-site support. In 2016 Gemba Academy expanded its services to include consulting, training, coaching and project support on-site.
Meet our Team
Mike has over 30 years of experience in production management, engineering and operational excellence. He led several very successful global lean transformations, recognized by winning three Industry Week Top 10 Plant of the Year and 2009 Assembly Plant of the Year awards. Mike has over ten years of consulting experience as a global senior consultant for Gemba Research, and as a global Director for Kaizen Institute. Mike served as Lean Sensei for Batesville Casket Company and in a variety of engineering, operations and quality roles in manufacturing.
Mike holds a Master’s Degree in Manufacturing Management from GMI Engineering and Management Institute, a Bachelor’s Degree in Production and Operations Management from Miami University, and a Six Sigma Black Belt from Milwaukee School of Engineering. Mike trained directly under Shigeo Shingo.
Mark has over 20 years of experience in manufacturing operations management, industrial engineering, and leadership positions in business transformation. This includes five years as managing and leading Lean management at Terex Corporation / Genie Industries, the Kodak Operating System, and Lean Supplier Development at the Boeing Company.
Mark has worked extensively in North America, China and Europe, effectively conveying Lean management practices and concepts in a variety of cultures. He coached, mentored and developed executive teams and site leaders while leading Lean Transformations for multiple global corporations. Mark developed, implemented and delivered train-the-trainer for A3 problem solving, root cause analysis, kaizen, andon problem escalation, kanban system and ERP integration with Lean pull. Mark is a globally recognized expert in the Toyota Kata methodology. He has a passion for development future continuous improvement leaders.
Marked served in the U.S. Army for 10 years as a Commissioned Officer, managing heavy equipment maintenance. He earned a Bachelors Degree from Clarkson University.
Anders brings more than 30 years of experience in plant management, engineering and quality management to Gemba Academy, including over twenty years of consulting across a diverse range of businesses.
Anders learned lean management first hand from Shigeo Shingo during the early years when he visited Canada to teach manufacturers there about the Toyota Production System. Anders was an early adopter and became adept at Quick Die Change for stamping presses of all sizes, enabling single piece flow. He used this experience to design, start up and manage just-in-time factories
Anders excels at coaching leadership teams during initial lean implementation. He has led dozens of shop floor lean implementations through combination of direct observation studies studies, value stream and process mapping, data-driven analytics, simulation, strategy development, leading kaizen events, and the design and implementation of tiered visual performance management system. He supports clients across Canada and the USA with project-based lean training and certification.
Anders earned B.A. Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto and a MA in Philosophy from the University of Wales Trinity St. David’s.
Director of Customer Success
Prior to Gemba Academy, Steve had a diverse career ranging from being responsible for a large medical device sales territory, plant manager where he leveraged lean methods to drive improvement, and VP Operations at Specialty Silicone Fabricators where he led the lean efforts of the company. He has served on the western region board of The Association for Manufacturing Excellence and has worked with the Michigan Lean Learning Consortium and the California Central Coast Lean Forum.

Jon co-founded the lean consulting and training firm Gemba Research in 1998, which became part of Kaizen Institute in 2011. Jon served as CEO and board member of Kaizen Institute for 4 years. Jon has led dozens of lean transformation projects in a wide range of industries. He has helped thousands of people across 20+ countries understand and apply Toyota Production System principles. Jon co-authored the Shingo Prize-winning book, Creating a Kaizen Culture. He contributes to a variety of publications. Jon is a co-founder and Partner in Gemba Academy.
Ron has more than 15 years of experience in various manufacturing, supply chain, and senior leadership roles. Ron has held the titles of process engineer, engineering manager, master black belt, and director of manufacturing & continuous improvement. In 2002 Ron was the first American to win the Nokia Global Six Sigma and Overall Quality award in Helsinki, Finland. Ron holds a bachelors degree in automated manufacturing and an MBA in technology management.
Kevin has over 30 years of manufacturing leadership experience in the automotive lighting, telecom electronics, and medical device industries. He has been responsible for lean transformations at Sylvania, Abbott Laboratories, Newport Corporation, and most recently as President of Specialty Silicone Fabricators. He guest lectures on business, manufacturing, and leadership topics at his alma mater Rensselaer as well as CalPoly. Kevin is on the board of directors of two technology companies and two regional public policy councils, and actively supports early stage companies.
